The Missing X400: Why Vivo Just Skipped a Generation

Vivo just pulled back the curtain on its latest flagship lineup: the X500, X500 Pro, and the massive X500 Pro Max. It’s an aggressive launch packed with 200-megapixel sensors and monstrous 8,000mAh batteries. But if you've been following smartphone release cycles, you probably noticed a massive elephant in the room.

What happened to the Vivo X400?

To anyone outside of Asia, skipping an entire generation looks like a bizarre typo from the marketing team. But in reality, it’s a calculated move rooted deeply in tetraphobia- (the fear of the number 4 four). In Mandarin and Cantonese, the word for "four" sounds almost identical to the word for "death." Because of this, stamping a giant "4" on a flagship device is widely considered terrible luck and a massive commercial risk across Asian tech markets.

Vivo is far from the first brand to dodge this number. OnePlus skipped a "OnePlus 4" entirely when moving its lineup forward from the 3 series to the 5 back in 2017. Asus did the exact same thing years later, jumping their flagship gaming line straight from the ROG Phone 3 to the ROG Phone 5.

Now that the naming mystery is out of the way, let’s look at what Vivo actually put into these phones. Here is how the new hardware stacks up across the 2026 lineup:

​Apple has updated its baseline audio lineup with the introduction of the AirPods 5.

​The standout feature of this generation is a fully dynamic audio environment. The AirPods 5 can now automatically adjust from Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) to transparency mode in real-time, responding instantly to shifts in background noise. This removes the need for manual toggling when moving between quiet environments and busy streets.

​The standard AirPods 5 model launches at $129, while the version equipped with a wireless charging case is priced at $149.

​Apple’s latest wearable update pushes both biometric accuracy and real-world utility forward, introducing what the company claims is the most accurate heart rate sensing ever built into a wearable device.

​For daily usability, the flagship software addition is a Live Rewind feature, which generates a rolling 15-second transcript of spoken audio. To address the immediate privacy concerns of an active microphone, Apple implemented a strict hardware-level safeguard: the audio is neither stored on the device nor recorded to the cloud, ensuring not even Apple can access the data.

​The standard Apple Watch model starts at $399, while the rugged Apple Watch Ultra model will retail for $799.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max

Apple has officially revealed its latest flagship tier, introducing the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

At the core of both devices is Apple’s new A20 Pro silicon, built using 2-nanometre technology. Apple claims the processor’s updated supercores deliver the fastest processing performance currently available in any smartphone.

For the camera system, Apple introduced a physical variable aperture mechanism capable of adjusting between f/1.48 at its widest down to f/4.0. The aperture automatically adjusts depending on the specific scene and ambient lighting conditions. For creators wanting direct management over their shots, Apple added a dedicated "Pro Control" mode, allowing manual control of the camera settings directly within the native interface.

To address the growing crisis of synthetic media, Apple is implementing a two-pronged authenticity system. At the moment of capture, a new Apple Reference Image feature securely signs the sensor data to prove a photograph is genuine and unaltered. For photos altered by generative AI, Apple is integrating the SynthID standard via an upcoming software update to embed invisible watermarks.

Pricing and Availability

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at a base price of $1,199, while the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Both flagship models are available in four finishes: black, silver, a light blue called glacier, and an all-new burgundy.

The iPhone Duo

Apple's debut into the foldable market comes with a passport form factor phone that, when open, looks and feels like an iPad mini. Apple calls it the iPhone Duo.

When opened, the Duo features an under-the-display camera which Apple calls the FaceTime Cam. Notably, the FaceTime Cam is not as great when compared to the main cover screen's front camera.

In the recently concluded September keynote, Apple confirmed the iPhone Duo will support the Apple Pencil, noting that this is their first iPhone to ever have this feature.

For authentication, Apple opted for a side-mounted fingerprint sensor (Touch ID), meaning we will not be seeing Apple's Face ID on the foldable. Additionally, the Duo can also be unlocked using the Apple Watch.

It features Grade 5 polished titanium frames and a titanium plate in the inner display, launching in two exclusive color options: Star White and Night Sky. Apple says the inner display utilizes a nano-texture and matte surface finish that will help resist scratches.

Pricing and Availability

The iPhone Duo will start at a premium price point of $1,999 for the base 256GB model, scaling up to $3,199 for the top-tier 2TB version. Pre-orders for major markets open on Friday, October 16, with official availability beginning Friday, October 23.
